“I had never been to Ukraine and had no connection with Ukraine before the war.” Then Dell Loy Hansen watched the images of millions fleeing Russia’s full-scale invasion — and reached out to a friend to ask how he could help.
🇺🇸🇺🇦 Three years later, the American businessman says he has spent more than $140 million of his own money on Ukrainians displaced by Russia’s war.
Outside Kyiv, he built Hansen Village — a community of some 2,000 people, with a kindergarten, medical care, playgrounds and a school for 1,000 students under construction. Families who lost their homes to occupation and war live rent-free for up to five years while they rebuild their lives.
🏠 “It was never about building homes,” Hansen says. “It was always about how can I do whatever I need to do to restore their dignity that was so unjustly taken away.”
Independence Avenue Media traveled to Hansen Village to meet the families starting over because of it.
