Ukraine War Beneath Washington: The Symphony of War

An underground space beneath Washington becomes a stand-in for Azovstal. The Trumpeter, an immersive theatrical performance based on real events during Russia’s siege of Mariupol, recreates the atmosphere of the Azovstal bunkers through sound, movement, and live music. Audiences move through a dark underground tunnel with flashlights as the story of the last surviving member of a Ukrainian military orchestra unfolds.

Through explosions, sirens, and Ukrainian folk songs, the performance explores survival, isolation, and the search for meaning in the middle of war — what the creators call a “Symphony of War.”

Artists behind the production say the goal is not only to tell Ukraine’s story, but to help audiences feel it.
