President Donald Trump’s Russian diesel deal risks damaging U.S. interests and weakening American leadership, former U.S. ambassador to Ukraine William B. Taylor says. What does the agreement mean for sanctions on Russia, peace talks and Ukraine’s ability to rely on Washington?
In this interview with Independence Avenue Media’s Kartlos Sharashenidze, Taylor argues that economic, military and diplomatic pressure on Vladimir Putin is necessary to bring Russia to meaningful negotiations. He discusses the controversy over Russian diesel imports, the role of European sanctions and what a real energy ceasefire would need to hold as winter approaches.
Taylor also explains why Ukraine should keep working with the United States while developing a parallel “Plan B” with Europe. The conversation covers U.S. intelligence sharing, Ukrainian defense capabilities, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, wartime elections and Taylor’s proposal for NATO to intercept Russian aerial threats before they reach allied territory.
William B. Taylor served as U.S. ambassador to Ukraine from 2006 to 2009 and as chargé d’affaires in Kyiv from 2019 to 2020.
